Berlin Convention OfficeMeeting Place Berlin 2009

Lifestyle and high culture, experiment and tradition: an unsurpassed offering of culture is Berlin’s trademark. More than 170 museums and about 430 galleries in Berlin show artwork of worldly importance from all eras and from new promising artistic directions. Numerous interesting exhibitions and festivals invite Berliners and guests of Berlin to admire their art treasures.

Highlights on the art calendar are e.g. the Classic Open Air Festival at the Gendarmenmarkt in Berlin’s historic centre with its splendid classic architecture, the passionate and fiery programme with “Nessun Dorma” in the Puccini night, Marshall & Alexander, highlights from “Carmen” and a South American night with Semino Rossi & Friends. Between 2 and 6 July 2009 around 100 national and international hosted buyers, on the invitation of the Berlin Convention Office, will have an opportunity to see for themselves the broad range of services and events and the high standards of the Berlin providers.

GERMANY: Hooray for Berlin!

Berlin Despite a strong Euro and the international economic situation, Berlin had a record number of visitors in 2008. The MICE sector reported record numbers hosting 104,600 meetings and events for about 8.15 million attendees with a total of 4.7 million overnights.

Berlin Tourism Marketing’s new CEO Burkhard Kieker said, “We are thrilled to report such positive results. While London and Paris suffered double-digit decreases, Berlin’s very competitive hotel rates and overall unbeatable value kept attracting visitors from Europe as well as overseas.”

Average hotel rates for 4 and 5-Star properties were at around 138 Euro, which is less than half of what visitors are paying on average in London or Paris.

This year, events related to the 20th Anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall are expected to generate extra interest in Berlin and hopefully keep visitor numbers stable at the 2008 levels.
