MPI (Meeting Professionals International) is forming a Southern African MPI Community. The Cape Town International Convention Center (CTICC) is the first official partner to support this new organization.

On establishing the Southern African group, Joyce Dogniez, MPI Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) Director of Operations said, “This is a significant development in reinforcing MPI’s commitment to its global vision to build a rich global meetings industry community…South Africa has a growing and vibrant meetings industry..”  Dirk Elzinga, Managing Director of the CTICC, said, “…South Africa is still a relatively young international meeting destination. Creating the possibility for a number of local meeting planners to benefit from the global MPI knowledge base will undoubtedly contribute to further increase the level of professionalism in the African meeting industry. It certainly will enhance the experiences of the CTICC and meeting organizers throughout the country.

The MPI Southern Africa Community is also supported by MPI’s alliance with the Southern African Association for the Conference Industry (SAACI).

More evidence of the growing popularity of Southern Africa is the International Publishers Association’s (IPA) Publishers Congress choosing Cape Town and the Western Cape Province for their 2012 Congress at the Cape Town International Convention Centre. This will be the first IPA congress in Africa. And Calvyn Gilfellan, Chief Executive of Cape Town Routes Unlimited said,  “Cape Town and the Western Cape is extremely proud to have beaten competitors such as India, Russia and Bosnia Herzegovina to secure the 29th IPA Publishers Congress…It just once again illustrates the power and potential business tourism (meetings, incentive travel, conferences and events) has to sustain tourism.

Until next time
Best
